The authors have identified the key stages of research schools in the context of an interdisciplinary approach, and distinguished three hierarchical levels of the study (empirical – factual, theoretical – historical and scientific, and research-on-research). Scientific approaches to study the Ukrainian scientific schools in the field of human geography were analized. The authors have compared two basic concepts of the history of Ukrainian human geography: "scientific school" and "scientific direction".
