Abstract:
An important component of the global human security and national security is a food security. In conditions of the stable trend for reducing number of malnourished or starving people for the last 50 years, food scarcity now suffers every ninth inhabitant of the planet and the world food issues are called one of the major unsolved problems of modern society. Ensuring food security in Ukraine received considerable attention because of the socio-economic and political importance of this issue. An important aspect is spatial differentiation of food insecurity levels caused by not only the potential and real possibilities of agriculture and food production, but also by significant variation in income levels, age structure, urban and rural settling. Just this aspect of food security requires regular socio-geographical studies of food availability in Ukraine and its regions. Therefore this paper is aimed at the food security explanation, determination of its indicators and threats, analysis of spatial differentiation of food availability in Ukraine in terms of per capita foodstuff consumption and nutrition structure. For this we used quantitative methods of socio-geographic research, including statistical, comparative analysis, mapping of the regional differences in foodstuff consumption, correlation analysis to identify factors of food availability, cluster analysis to group regions by similarity of food consumption patterns.
