The article explores the importance of the research schools in the Ukrainian human geography as one of the central issues of its history. The authors have identified the key stages of research schools in the context of an interdisciplinary approach, and distinguished three hierarchical levels of the study (empirical – factual, theoretical – historical and scientific, and research-on-research). Scientific approaches to study the Ukrainian scientific schools in the field of human geography were analized. The authors have compared two basic concepts of the history of Ukrainian human geography: "scientific school" and "scientific direction".
